To be able to access the following listening materials you will need a multimedia computer and a piece of software called RealPlayer which allows audio files to be downloaded and played in a compressed format. You can download RealPlayer free at http://www.real.com

Breaking News English http://www.breakingnewsenglish.com
Lessons ready to use from current events News Items.
Nature http://www.nature.com/
New Scientist http://www.newscientist.com
Scientific American http://www.sciam.com
All three of the above sites will give you limited access to articles and abstracts on scientific issues. Again, useful authentic source materials for classes.
Why Files http://whyfiles.org
This has to be one of my favourite sites. Based in the States it is designed to interest high school students in the sciences and has a large archive of interesting articles on a variety of subjects. Well worth a look.

Also, if your students have a high enough reading level, they may enjoy reading academic articles in their areas of interest that you can download for them from academic E-journals or news stories from your favorite news sources elsewhere on the Web.

Writing-class materials

Too many to describe in detail, the following are all links to downloadable materials (information and exercises) on all aspects of academic writing. I particularly recommend the Purdue University site which is a treasure trove of valuable materials. These sites should be the first stop for anyone teaching a writing course.

Examinations

Often students will ask you for information about English language examinations. Here is a list of links with information.

IELTS http://www.ielts.org
IELTS is the British/Australasian equivalent of the TOEFL exam and is becoming increasingly important for Chinese students wanting to study in Commonwealth countries.
TOEFL http://www.testwise.com/review.html
TOEFL Computer http://www.toefl.org
Both these sites provide detailed information on the (dreaded!) TOEFL exam. The second one gives details of the changes brought about by the switch to computer delivery.
TOEFL online practice http://www.stuff.co.uk/toefl.htm
Online practice for the TOEFL (requires Shockwave plug-in).

CALL software

CELIA http://www.latrobe.edu.au/www/education/celia/celia.html
The CELIA archive is based at LaTrobe university in Australia. It is a download centre and ranks as definitely the first stop for any teacher looking for shareware, freeware or demo CALL software.
Clarity Software http://www.clarity.com.hk
Based in Hong Kong, this is the site of the Clarity Software company and the source of some rather interesting demo software particularly suited to the teaching of academic English.
Cutting Edge CALL Demos http://www-writing.berkeley.edu/chorus/call/cuttingedge.html
As its name suggests, this is a site at Berkeley in the States designed to be a showcase for the use of cutting edge technology in language teaching. You can complete the activities online but there is no software to download.
Creative Software http://www.cict.co.uk/software
Martin Holmes has to be one of the most altruistic English teachers on the net! His site is a goldmine of freeware (and some shareware) software tools for English language teachers worldwide. Here you will find software to help you grade wordprocessed text as well as many other things.
